Cliff Walk - Newport, RI

What do you do in Newport on our road trip when its blazingly sunny and 105 degrees? How about just a little stroll on Cliff Walk! Cliff Walk is a beautiful scenic walk along the cliffs of Newport, RI. It is 3 1/2 miles and takes you past the old Vanderbilt and Astor summer mansions among others. Other mansion highlights include the Breakers, Rosecliff and the home Doris Duke lived in on Bellevue Avenue.

Turns out - Cliff Walk was not the best thing to do that day. Our friend's mom seemed very against it and offered to pick us up when we quit but I thought she was being dramatic because of the heat. Of course...she was right, as all moms usually are. I thought I had walked Cliff Walk plenty of times with my mother and her friends when they would take us back to visit their alma mater, Salve Regina. Little did I realize - I had not actually done all of Cliff Walk. In actuality, I had only walked on the short paved path for less than a mile which is shaded and flat and easy.

At one point, Peter and I reached a sign that said next exit: 2 miles. We felt alright at this point and decided to continue. The nicely paved path ended. Suddenly, we were climbing over huge boulders, sweating in the sun, and could clearly die if we took a wrong step tumbling to our death. (Did we somehow miss the rest of the path? What is wrong with us? Can we not follow the path? No - we were still going the right way and unaware of the torture that lay ahead. )

Did I mention that we were wearing FLIP FLOPS? Flip flops that did not grip onto boulders well and forced us to slide all over the place? Did I mention that Peter stepped on glass that cut through the flip flop into his foot? Did I mention that he was bleeding everywhere? So you better believe that we were not happy campers (hence the lack of pictures). I would say that we probably did not even speak to one another for the last 30 minutes. FINALLY, we reached Reject's Beach. If only we had our bathing suits to jump in!

Note to self for next walk: do not go anywhere near Cliff Walk in the blazing summer heat at noon. Wear your bathing suit under your clothes. Wear sneakers. BRING WATER.

St. Georges and view from the top of the 40 steps.

Salve Regina - my mama's alma mater!

I wish I had copies of the pictures of me playing on these trees when I was little!
